One of the secrets of the roasting of Costa Coffee is in the use of traditional Italian “Drum”, where only small amounts of coffee is prepared. Beans are roasted slowly at low temperatures, which subsequently allows the coffee to maintain its distinctive, delicate flavor. Another secret of the brothers Costa is the unique blend Mocha that contains Arabica and Robusta beans in the ratio 6 to 1.

In October 1995 Costa was purchased by Whitbread Plc. At that time the chain had 41 sites in the United Kingdom.
